Accessories:

Josh Cowen quickly realized Children as well as adults would soon tire of watching a train go round and round so it wasnt long until accessories came on the scene. Most were engineering marvels in their day. Play value became the modis operende for Lionel and later Gilbert.

In the beginning Lionel had the best Coal Dumping cars; with the 3400 series then the twin dump 3300 series. Both looked very much like prototypes seen on major carriers. The 3300 series slowed the dumping process down from the sudden opening that sent coal everywhere but where you wanted it.

But then entered MTH with the RailKing motor driven dump car. Built with a heavy low center of gravity these cars are nice. The gradual opening looks so realistic and dumps the coal where it is supposed to go.

Looking at the bottomside of these dump cars I note the pickup shoes are different. The shoes are smooth without a guide edge. My guess this shape avoids catching on switches. The cars are too long to have both shoes on the uncoupling/unloading track at the same time. I haven't tried mine yet but I'm guessing only one shoe needs to make contact.
